Sweden's Next Citizenship Test Is Planned for April–May 2027: What Is Known So Far
With the first results published, UHR has also given the first official timing for the next sitting. Its pages, updated on 22 October 2026, now say the next civics test is planned for April–May 2027. That is a period, not a date. The exact day, the location, when registration opens, the test time and the number of questions are all still to be announced. One thing is already fixed in law: it will be the first test with a 2 000-kronor fee. This article sets out what is known, what is not, and what you can prepare now, quoting UHR, Migrationsverket and the Swedish Code of Statutes. This is general information, not legal advice.
What UHR says about the next test
The sentence appears on UHR's question-and-answer page, its results page and its page about the test:
"Nästa prov i samhällskunskap planeras att genomföras under perioden april-maj 2027. Information om datum för nästa prov i samhällskunskap kommer."
The next test in civics is planned to take place during the period April–May 2027. Information about the date will follow. The page about the test adds that location is open too: "Information om plats och datum för nästa prov kommer."
This replaces UHR's earlier line, which said only that the next date would be announced "under hösten", during the autumn. Note the word planeras: the test is planned for that window, not confirmed for a specific day. If you have seen a precise date for the 2027 test elsewhere, it did not come from UHR.

Who can register, and how
You cannot simply sign up. Migrationsverket decides who takes the test, and only people it refers can register. From UHR's page about the test:
"Det är Migrationsverket som avgör vem som får skriva provet. Det kommer bara gå att anmäla sig till provet om man fått ett brev från Migrationsverket."
Registration is currently closed. Information about when registration opens for the next test will follow. Three practical points from UHR's pages:
- Everyone registers again. "När det finns ett nytt provtillfälle att anmäla sig till behöver du göra en ny anmälan." This applies to people who failed in August too.
- Late registration is not possible. Once registration closes, it is closed.
- The account. You create an account with BankID or Freja eID. Without an e-ID, you can use your personal identity number and the personal code in the letter from Migrationsverket.
The 2 000-kronor fee starts with this test
The first test was free. The next one will not be, if it is held in 2027 as planned.
Anyone taking a citizenship test must pay UHR a fee of 2 000 kronor. The transitional provisions say the section applies "för första gången i fråga om medborgarskapsprov som genomförs 2027", for the first time to tests held in 2027. The fee does not apply to a person who is stateless and has been granted refugee status or a travel document by a Swedish authority.
UHR has not yet published how or when the fee is paid. Its registration page still reads "Information om anmälningsavgift kommer."
Format: what we know and what may change
UHR states that the test "är på svenska, skrivs på papper och består av flervalsfrågor där ett svar är rätt": it is in Swedish, written on paper, and made up of multiple-choice questions with one correct answer. Its examples use four answer options. You cannot take it in your native language.
The rest is open: "Information om provtid och antal frågor för nästa provtillfälle kommer." The test time and number of questions for the next test will be announced. The August test had 60 questions, but only 40 counted because it was a trial test, and the pass mark was 28 of 40. Our article on the results explains this. Do not assume the spring 2027 test will look the same.
Bigger in 2027, possibly outside Stockholm
The first test was held in one place, Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö, for 875 people. UHR's final report of 30 September 2026 says it "planerar att utöka delprovet i samhällskunskap under 2027 med fler provtagare och provplatser": it plans to expand the civics test during 2027 with more test-takers and more test locations. Which cities, and how many places, has not been announced.
You may not need the test at all
The test is one way to show knowledge of Swedish society, not the only one. Migrationsverket's page on citizenship for adults accepts a pass grade in samhällskunskap or basic social-science subjects from:
- year 9 of compulsory school or adapted compulsory school, or years 9–10 of special school;
- upper secondary school, adapted upper secondary school, or folkhögskola studies at upper-secondary level;
- municipal adult education (komvux).
The test is for people who cannot show the knowledge that way. Whether your grades are enough is decided by Migrationsverket.
The language test is still undecided
The spring 2027 test is the civics test only. UHR repeats that "Prov i svenska kommer att införas vid senare tillfälle", the Swedish-language test will be introduced later. In its 30 September report, UHR recommended that the reading and listening test start in autumn 2029, as we reported on 5 October. As of 24 October 2026, we have found no government decision on that date.
Migrationsverket's page now reads: "Provet i svenska kan införas senare än planerat. Kravet på kunskaper i svenska finns kvar, men tills vidare kan du visa dina kunskaper på andra sätt." The Swedish test may come later than planned; the requirement remains, but for now you can show your Swedish in other ways, such as grades from komvux, the highest sfi course, or a Tisus result. During the transition period it also accepts a result from another Swedish test that shows functional-level knowledge "med hög grad av säkerhet", and it now names Swedex as an example.
What to prepare now
- Watch for the letter. Without a letter from Migrationsverket you cannot register. If you think you should have one, contact Migrationsverket, not UHR.
- Check your grades first. If you have a pass grade in social studies from Swedish schooling, the test may not apply to you.
- Check your ID. UHR requires a physical, valid identity document on test day and warns that a new ID card can take time to order. For the August test, a foreign passport was not accepted.
- Prepare any adjustment certificates. If you need adjustments for dyslexia, ADHD, visual impairment or the physical test environment, UHR advises preparing the certificate in time. Late certificates are not accepted.
- Budget 2 000 kronor, unless the stateless-refugee exemption applies to you.
- Study UHR's material. UHR has published study material on Swedish society. It notes that it does not stand behind practice tests made by others, including ours, and has not checked their quality.
Six months to prepare
If you are on the list for spring 2027, you have time to prepare properly. The Swedish Citizenship Test app structures UHR's study material on Swedish society into 181 lessons across 21 topic areas, with 2 000+ practice questions and timed exam modes, including a full test simulation. Independent study tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by UHR. Free to install.

Every factual claim in this article comes from the pages listed above and is quoted verbatim in Swedish where stated. As of 24 October 2026, UHR has not published the exact date, location, registration window, test time, number of questions, pass mark or fee procedure for the next test, and the government has not published a decision on the Swedish-language test date; this article estimates none of them. This is independent journalism and general information about Swedish public administration, not legal advice. Questions about an individual citizenship case should go to Migrationsverket, and questions about the test to UHR.
