UHR Confirms: Citizenship Test Registration Is Open — Deadline 2 July 2026

UHR (Universitets- och högskolerådet) has officially confirmed that registration for the 15 August 2026 medborgarskapsprovet pilot is open right now and closes at the latest on 2 July 2026. The pilot is free of charge, but you can only register if you received an anvisningsbrev (invitation letter) from Migrationsverket. Here is exactly what UHR says, how to register tonight, and what to do if you have the invitation letter in your hand.

What UHR confirmed today, in its own words

UHR's official registration page at uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/anmalan now publishes the operational details for the August pilot. The key verbatim passages:

"Anmälan till medborgarskapsprovet är öppen."

That is: "Registration for the citizenship test is open."

"För att kunna anmäla dig till medborgarskapsprovet den 15 augusti 2026 [...] anmälan är öppen och stänger senast den 2 juli."

That is: "To be able to register for the citizenship test on 15 August 2026, registration is open and closes at the latest on 2 July." In context, the year is 2026.

"Du kan bara anmäla dig om du fått ett anvisningsbrev från Migrationsverket."

That is: "You can only register if you have received an invitation letter (anvisningsbrev) from Migrationsverket." This is the gating step — UHR does not control who can register; Migrationsverket controls it.

"Provet den 15 augusti 2026 kommer att vara kostnadsfritt."

That is: "The test on 15 August 2026 will be free of charge."

"Du måste ha med dig en fysisk och giltig id-handling på provdagen."

That is: "You must bring a physical and valid ID document on test day." Digital-only IDs do not count for the August pilot.

Why this matters tonight

The deadline is just under four weeks away. Three things make the timing tight:

  • The August 2026 pilot is the first ever Swedish citizenship test. Missing this round means waiting for the next rollout — and UHR has not yet announced the next test date.
  • You can only register once. There is no waitlist or appeal mechanism if you miss 2 July.
  • Migrationsverket cannot grant your citizenship without the test result if your case is decided under the new rules (in force since 6 June 2026 — see our 7 June reform-live post). The test is the new gatekeeping mechanism.

For broader context on what the 6 June reform actually changed, see our 2026 changes overview. For the operational live page at Migrationsverket, see our 5 June e-service closure post.

Three login methods at registration

UHR's registration form accepts three authentication paths. Pick whichever is fastest for you:

  1. BankID — the standard Swedish digital identity. Most adult residents in Sweden have this on their phone via their bank's app. Open Mobile BankID, scan the QR code from UHR's site, confirm. Takes under 60 seconds.
  2. Freja eID — a free Swedish digital ID alternative. Install the Freja eID app, verify your identity at a Swedish post office or police station (if not already verified), then scan UHR's QR code. Slower to set up but usable if you do not have BankID.
  3. Personnummer + personal code from anvisningsbrev — the fallback. Your Migrationsverket invitation letter contains a personal code next to your personnummer. Enter both on the UHR form. This works without BankID or Freja eID.

If you do not have BankID and have not received your anvisningsbrev yet, start the BankID enrolment with your bank today — it can take a few days to activate.

What to bring on test day

UHR's verbatim requirement is clear: a physical, valid ID document. That means:

  • A valid passport (Swedish or foreign — your call which one is most up to date)
  • A valid Swedish national ID card
  • A valid Swedish driver's licence
  • A valid uppehållstillståndskort (residence permit card)

What does not count:

  • Photos of an ID on your phone
  • BankID alone (it is digital, not a physical document)
  • An expired passport, driver's licence, or residence card
  • An ID from a country whose documents Sweden does not recognise — confirm with Migrationsverket if uncertain

What to do if you have your anvisningsbrev right now

Here is the actionable checklist for tonight:

  1. Find your anvisningsbrev. Check Mina sidor on migrationsverket.se and your physical mail.
  2. Verify your personnummer and the personal code on the letter — you may need both at the UHR form even if you log in with BankID.
  3. Open uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/anmalan. Click the registration link.
  4. Log in using BankID, Freja eID, or your personnummer + personal code.
  5. Fill in your details — name, contact email, phone number, and any accommodation requests (extra time, accessibility).
  6. Submit. Save the confirmation email and screenshot.
  7. Calendar the test date: 15 August 2026, Stockholm.
  8. Begin preparation. The test is based on UHR's official Sverige i fokus material — see our Sverige i fokus guide.

What to do if you have NOT received your anvisningsbrev

If you have not received an invitation letter from Migrationsverket and the test applies to your case, contact Migrationsverket through Mina sidor and ask about your status. Common reasons for not yet receiving the letter:

  • Your case has not been triaged into the August pilot — Migrationsverket prioritises specific case-cohorts. You may be invited to a later round.
  • Your address registered with Skatteverket is incorrect — Migrationsverket sends physical letters to the registered address.
  • Your case has been paused (e.g., under the 18–21 young-adult proposal — see our 18–21 explainer).
  • Your case has not yet reached the new-rule assessment stage — check Migrationsverket's published case-handling status.

If your invitation arrives after 2 July 2026, you cannot take the August pilot and will need to wait for UHR's next test round. UHR has not yet announced the next round, but reporting indicates it will roll out in late 2026 or 2027.

Beware of scams — UHR's warning is direct

UHR has been explicit that registration is only via uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/anmalan. Any of these are scam signals:

  • A SMS asking you to pay to "secure your test slot" — the August pilot is free
  • An email link to a non-uhr.se domain claiming to be the registration page
  • A phone call or WhatsApp message asking for your BankID code, Freja PIN, or personnummer + personal code
  • A third-party "registration service" charging a fee — UHR has not authorised any third party to register on your behalf

If you receive any of these, do not respond. Forward to Polisen if you believe a crime has been committed, and confirm at uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet.

Use the four weeks until 2 July wisely

Between registering tonight and the 2 July deadline, the next priority is preparation. The 15 August test covers civics knowledge based on UHR's official Sverige i fokus material — 14 chapters from "Att komma till Sverige" to "Hållbar utveckling och miljö". Realistic timeline:

  • Tonight to mid-June: Read all 14 chapters of Sverige i fokus at least once. Free PDF + MP3 from UHR.
  • Mid-June to early July: Drill practice questions on weak chapters. Our 30-day prep plan is structured for this.
  • Early July to mid-August: Mock exams and targeted review. Two full mock exams in the last 10 days.
  • 13–14 August: Light review and rest. Hydrate, sleep early.
  • 15 August: Take the test. Bring physical valid ID and your kallelse from UHR.

The free Swedish Citizenship Test Prep app has 180+ lessons mapped directly to the 14 Sverige i fokus chapters, 2,000+ practice questions, full mock exams, and audio in 5 languages — designed exactly for the period between getting your anvisningsbrev and walking into the test on 15 August.

Caveats

  • This article quotes the live UHR registration page as of 8 June 2026. Operational details may change as UHR processes the August pilot — always confirm the latest at uhr.se.
  • The 2 July 2026 deadline is the latest registration date. UHR may close registration earlier if all slots fill. Do not wait until the last day.
  • This article is general guidance — not legal advice. For your specific case (your anvisningsbrev, your eligibility, your case status), contact Migrationsverket or your migrationsrättsligt ombud.
