How to Register for Sweden's Citizenship Test (2026)
You cannot simply sign up for Sweden's citizenship test whenever you like. There is one firm rule: you can only register after you receive a letter from Migrationsverket. Registration opens in early June 2026, and the first test takes place on 15 August 2026 in Stockholm.
The one rule that surprises people: you need a letter first
The most important thing to understand about registering for Sweden's citizenship test is this: you can only register after you have received a letter from Migrationsverket. Both Migrationsverket and UHR have confirmed this.
You do not register the moment you decide you want to take the test. You wait until Migrationsverket sends you the letter — and that letter is what allows you to sign up through UHR, the authority that runs the test.
If you have a citizenship application in progress but have not received a letter from Migrationsverket, you are not yet able to register for the test. There is no separate "sign-up early" route.
The timeline for the first test
Here is what is confirmed for the first sitting:
- Registration opens: early June 2026 (exact date not yet published).
- First test date: 15 August 2026.
- Location: Stockholm.
- Cost: free of charge for the August 2026 sitting.
The general law changes that introduced the test came into force on 6 June 2026, which is why registration opens around the start of that month.
How the process fits together
Step by step, the path looks like this:
- 1. You apply for citizenship with Migrationsverket and meet the other requirements (residency, self-sufficiency, orderly life).
- 2. Migrationsverket sends you a letter when it is your turn to demonstrate the knowledge requirement via the test.
- 3. You register for the test through UHR, using the letter.
- 4. You sit the test on the scheduled date in Stockholm.
Because the letter from Migrationsverket is the trigger, your timing depends partly on where your application sits in Migrationsverket's queue. Processing times can be long, so the letter may not arrive immediately after you apply.
The two-step registration model
Sweden's medborgarskapsprovet does not use a single sign-up form. Two different authorities are involved, and you only move to the second step once the first has happened.
Step 1 — Migrationsverket invites eligible applicants
You must already have an active citizenship application with Migrationsverket. Migrationsverket decides when it is your turn to take the knowledge test and sends you a letter. For the August 2026 pilot, the invitation is limited to a small group of applicants because UHR is using the first sitting to validate the test format.
Step 2 — You register with UHR
Once you have the letter, you register at uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/anmalan. UHR (Universitets- och högskolerådet) administers the test, processes registrations and issues the summons. We cover the form itself in our step-by-step Anmälan guide.
The split matters: Migrationsverket decides whether you can take the test; UHR decides where and when.
What UHR needs from you when you register
Based on UHR's pilot guidance, be ready to provide:
- Personnummer — your Swedish personal identity number.
- Contact details — a valid email address and phone number for confirmations, reminders and the kallelse.
- Accessibility or accommodation requests — extra time, a separate room, or assistive technology if you have a documented need.
- Confirmation of your Migrationsverket letter — to verify you are an invited candidate.
UHR has not yet published the final list of required fields, so treat this as a preparation checklist.
Timeline and key dates
- June 2026: Registration opens at uhr.se. UHR has stated "early June 2026" but the exact date is not yet published.
- 15 August 2026: First pilot test in Stockholm. See our first test guide.
- Late 2026 to 2027: Rolling sittings expected to expand. UHR has not announced the schedule, fees or rollout pace.
- 1 October 2027: The separate language test is added under Prop 2025/26:175.
The most important date is the one on your Migrationsverket letter — not the public timeline.
Where the test is held
For the 15 August 2026 pilot, the test is held in Stockholm only. UHR has said the specific venue will be published closer to the date, and the formal kallelse will name the exact address and time slot.
After the pilot, sittings are expected to roll out to UHR's regular test cities — the network used for Högskoleprovet — including Göteborg, Malmö, Uppsala and Umeå. The exact list and timetable have not yet been finalised. UHR has not announced any travel reimbursement for candidates outside Stockholm.
What if you miss the registration deadline?
UHR has not yet announced a formal late-registration policy. Expect a fixed window per sitting: if you miss it, you wait for the next round and register then. Your Migrationsverket invitation should still be valid, but contact them if you are unsure.
Cancellation and rebooking
As of mid-2026, UHR has not published a formal cancellation policy for the citizenship test. If you need to cancel, contact UHR through the channels listed in your confirmation email as soon as you know, rather than simply not turning up.
What if you weren't invited but you're applying for citizenship?
This is the most common situation: you have an application in the queue but no letter has arrived.
- You cannot register for the August 2026 pilot — it is invite-only by design.
- Once the test rolls out fully, all eligible applicants will need to take it, subject to the exemptions.
- For now, prepare with UHR's free Sverige i fokus material, or follow our 30-day prep plan.
You do not need to do anything special to "queue" — Migrationsverket will contact you when it is your turn.
UHR's official guidance is clear: never pay via SMS, QR codes, or unknown links, and never hand over your BankID to someone claiming to "help you register". The only legitimate registration channel is uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/anmalan. The August 2026 pilot is free of charge, so any message asking for a payment to "secure your test slot" is a scam.
What happens after you register
- Confirmation email — a receipt that your registration was accepted.
- Reminder closer to the test date — typically a few weeks out.
- Kallelse (formal summons) — the official document with your test location, room, date and start time.
- On the day: bring valid photo ID (Swedish ID card, driver's licence, or passport) and the kallelse. Arrive early; UHR typically does not admit late candidates.

Frequently asked questions
Can I register before I get the Migrationsverket letter?
No. UHR's registration system is built around the Migrationsverket invitation. Without the letter, the form will not accept your application, and there is no separate "early sign-up" route.
Does registration cost anything?
The 15 August 2026 pilot is free of charge. UHR has not yet published fees for later sittings. See our note on the test fee and cost for what is expected going forward.
How long does the registration window stay open?
UHR has not yet published a closing date. For comparable UHR tests, the registration window is typically a few weeks long. The closing date will be on the UHR page once registration opens in June 2026.
What ID do I need to bring on test day?
Valid photo ID accepted in Sweden — a Swedish ID card, driver's licence, or passport. UHR is expected to confirm the exact list in the kallelse. Bring the kallelse itself too, either printed or on your phone.
Can someone else register on my behalf?
UHR has not published rules for third-party registration. As a safe default, register yourself using your own BankID and personnummer. Be especially cautious of anyone offering paid "registration services" — these are almost always scams.
