Sweden's Citizenship Test: Scoring, Pass Mark & Retakes — What We Know

Three of the most-asked questions about Sweden's citizenship test are: how is it scored, what is the pass mark, and can you retake it if you fail? UHR has now confirmed the format — about 60 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes, on paper — but it has not yet published the passing threshold or the retake rules. Here is what is genuinely confirmed — and what we are deliberately not guessing about.

What is actually confirmed

Let's start with the solid ground. These facts about the test are confirmed by official sources (UHR):

  • The first test is on 15 August 2026, in Stockholm.
  • The test has approximately 60 questions.
  • They are multiple-choice with four answer options, one of which is correct.
  • The actual test time is 90 minutes (plus extra time for a survey).
  • The test is written on paper, in Swedish.
  • It covers basic knowledge of Swedish society (the Swedish-language test comes later).
  • The subject areas are based on the official study material, "Sverige i fokus", produced by UHR together with Skolverket.
  • The August 2026 sitting is free of charge.

That tells you what the test is and how it is structured. It does not tell you how it is marked.

What is NOT yet published

This is the part many other sites get wrong by stating numbers that aren't official. UHR has not published:

  • The pass mark (the score you need to pass).
  • The scoring method or grade scale.
  • How results are reported.
  • The retake rules (omprov) — how soon you can retake, or whether attempts are limited.
Be careful with "X% to pass" claims.

If you see a specific pass percentage or retake rule stated as fact, treat it with caution — neither has been officially published by UHR. We would rather tell you "not confirmed yet" than repeat an unofficial number.

What we can reasonably expect

Without guessing at numbers, a few things are reasonable to anticipate, based on how comparable knowledge tests work and on the official material:

  • The test will draw on the "Sverige i fokus" material, so studying that content is the surest preparation.
  • There will be a defined passing standard — UHR will need to publish how a "pass" is determined before the test runs.
  • Because the test is being introduced at scale, retake arrangements of some kind are likely, but the specifics are UHR's to confirm.

We will update this page as UHR publishes the official format, pass mark, and retake rules.

You can't control the pass mark — you can control your preparation.

Whatever the final scoring rules, the test draws on the official Swedish-society material. The Swedish Civics app covers those subject areas in 13 languages with practice questions and full mock exams. Free to install.

Bottom line

The test's content and format are now known (about 60 multiple-choice questions, 90 minutes, on paper, in Swedish, based on "Sverige i fokus"), but its pass mark and retake rules are not yet published. Be sceptical of any source quoting exact figures for these. When UHR releases the official rules, uhr.se will be the authoritative source.
