Taking Sweden's Citizenship Test in August 2026: Where, When, and How to Register
Sweden's first citizenship (civics) test is almost here — 15 August 2026. But "taking it" comes with some surprising practical catches: it's Stockholm only, you can only register if Migrationsverket sends you a letter, and it's a pilot sitting whose results still count. Here's exactly how it works, based on what UHR (the body running it) has published.
When: 15 August 2026 (the law says "no later than 17 August")
UHR — Universitets- och högskolerådet, the Swedish Council for Higher Education — administers the test. It states the first society test "will be held on 15 August 2026." You may also see 17 August 2026 cited: that's the legal "no later than" deadline by which the test must first run. UHR simply scheduled the actual sitting just inside it, on the 15th. Both dates are correct and consistent.
Where: Stockholm only (for this first sitting)
For August 2026, the test takes place in Stockholm. UHR has not announced any other locations for this first sitting. If you live elsewhere in Sweden, plan for travel — and note UHR hasn't said whether future tests will be offered in more cities, so don't assume a local option yet.
Cost: free in 2026
The August 2026 test is free of charge, per UHR. The agency has not announced whether a fee will apply to later sittings, so we can't promise it stays free — but for this first test, there's no cost.
How to register: the letter catch
This is the catch that surprises people. Registration opens in early June 2026 (UHR says the exact date is still to be confirmed). But you cannot simply sign up:
"You can only register if you have received a letter from Migrationsverket." — UHR
In other words, the letter from Migrationsverket is your entry ticket. No letter, no registration. So watch your post (and your Mina sidor messages) — and don't expect to register on your own initiative without it.
Is it a "real" test? Yes — but it's a pilot sitting
There's a lot of confusion here, so let's be precise. The August 2026 society test is officially an utprövningsprov — a pilot/trial sitting. As UHR explains, that means it's "the first time the test questions are used in a real test situation," and extra time is given because of the trial nature.
But this is not a no-stakes practice run. A pass still counts as a valid, official result toward the citizenship knowledge requirement. So treat it as the real thing — because it is.
(Separately, you may have seen headlines about the test being "delayed" or "not ready." Those refer to the Swedish-language test, which has been pushed to no later than 1 October 2027 after UHR told the government in September 2025 it needed more time. The society test in August 2026 is going ahead on schedule.)
Do you even need to take it?
Not necessarily — and this is widely misunderstood. The test is the fallback, not a blanket requirement. The new rules require knowledge of Swedish society for applicants aged 16–66, but you can prove that knowledge in several ways:
- Swedish schooling;
- adult education (komvux) or folk high school;
- passing SFI course D.
Only "if you lack proof of your knowledge" are you offered the chance to take the citizenship test. So if you already have the right documentation, the test may not apply to you at all. See our guide on SFI course D and citizenship.
The format, in brief
- ~60 questions, multiple choice — four options each, one correct.
- 90 minutes of actual test time (with extra time given at this trial sitting).
- Taken on paper.
- Written in Swedish.
- Covers knowledge of Swedish society — democracy, rights and duties, the legal system, how the state and municipalities work, and so on.
- Pass mark: UHR has not published the number of correct answers required. Be cautious of "70–80%" figures online — they're from third-party sites, not UHR.
Frequently asked questions
When is Sweden's first citizenship test?
The first society (civics) test will be held on 15 August 2026. The law sets a deadline of no later than 17 August 2026, and UHR scheduled the first sitting just inside it, on 15 August.
Does the August 2026 test cost anything?
No. UHR states the August 2026 test is free of charge. UHR has not announced whether or when a fee might apply for later sittings.
Where is the test held?
The first test (August 2026) takes place in Stockholm. UHR has not announced additional locations for that sitting, and has not said whether later tests will be held elsewhere.
How do I register for the citizenship test?
Registration opens in early June 2026 (UHR has not yet published the exact date). Crucially, you can only register if you have received a letter from Migrationsverket — you cannot self-register without it.
Is the August 2026 test a real test or just a trial?
It is officially a pilot/trial sitting (utprövningsprov) — the first time the questions are used live, and extra time is given because of that. But a pass still counts as a valid result toward the citizenship knowledge requirement. It is not a no-stakes practice run.
Do I have to take the test at all?
Not necessarily. The test is the fallback for proving knowledge of Swedish society. If you can document that knowledge another way — Swedish schooling, adult education (komvux), folk high school, or passing SFI course D — you may not need to take the test. You'd be offered the test only if you lack such proof.
What's the format of the test?
About 60 multiple-choice questions, each with four options and one correct answer, with an actual test time of 90 minutes (extra time at the trial sitting). It is taken on paper and written in Swedish, covering knowledge of Swedish society. UHR has not published the pass mark.
