Sweden's First Citizenship Test Is Done. Results Come in October — and the Next Sitting Is Still Unwritten

UHR now writes about the test in the past tense

The clearest signal is grammatical. UHR's About the citizenship test page, last updated 17 August 2026, states:

"Det första provet i samhällskunskap genomfördes i augusti 2026. Information om nästa provtillfälle i samhällskunskap kommer. Prov i svenska kommer att införas vid senare tillfälle."

The first test in civics was held in August 2026. Information about the next civics sitting is to come. A test in Swedish will be introduced at a later date. UHR's FAQ, updated 18 August, uses the same tense and adds the staged framing:

"Provet kommer införas stegvis och i augusti 2026 genomfördes det första provet i samhällskunskap."

The test is being introduced in stages, and in August 2026 the first civics test was held. The same About page also now opens with a plain statement of why any of this exists:

"Den 6 juni 2026 ändrades medborgarskapslagen. Kraven för att bli svensk medborgare skärptes."

Results: October, date still unset

This is the substantive new fact. Through July and early August, UHR said results would be published "under hösten" — during the autumn, a three-month window. The FAQ now names a month:

"Resultatet publiceras i oktober. Information om vilket datum resultatet publiceras kommer."

The result is published in October. Information about which date is to come. That is a meaningful narrowing for anyone whose citizenship application is sitting behind this result: October rather than "sometime before December". It is still not a date, and UHR has not committed to one.

The delivery mechanism is unchanged, and it remains the practically important half:

"När det finns ett resultat från medborgarskapsprovet kommer du att kunna se det på ditt konto. Resultatet rapporteras automatiskt till Migrationsverket för deras fortsatta handläggning av din ansökan om medborgarskap."

When a result exists you will be able to see it in your account, and it is reported automatically to Migrationsverket for the continued processing of your citizenship application. No test-taker needs to forward anything. There is nothing to do between now and October except wait — and, for anyone who thinks they may need a second attempt, read the next two sections.

The next sitting: four blanks where there used to be answers

Read UHR's pages as they stood in July and as they stand today, and the same four questions have gone from answered to pending. This is the most consequential part of the rewrite, because it means the August sitting cannot safely be used as a template for the next one.

1. The format is open. Every UHR page now carries the same sentence in place of the old specification:

"Provet är på svenska, skrivs på papper och består av flervalsfrågor där ett svar är rätt. Information om provtid och antal frågor för nästa provtillfälle kommer."

The test is in Swedish, written on paper, and consists of multiple-choice questions where one answer is correct — and information about the test time and the number of questions for the next sitting is to come. In July the same pages stated a 90-minute test time and 60 questions. Those numbers are now absent from the About page, the FAQ and the test-day page alike. Three properties survive as commitments: Swedish, on paper, multiple-choice with one right answer. Length and question count are not among them.

This is less surprising than it first looks, and UHR's own rewrite says why. The section describing the August sitting as a trial has itself been converted to the past tense, under the heading "Provet i augusti var ett utprövningsprov" — the test in August was a trial test:

"Att det var ett utprövningsprov betyder att det var första gången provfrågorna användes i en verklig provsituation."

Being a trial test means it was the first time the test questions were used in a real test situation. UHR also puts its generous-timing note in the past: "Att det var ett utprövningsprov innebär också att det gavs generöst med tid vid provtillfället för alla och för de frågor som ställdes." Being a trial test also meant that generous time was given to everyone at that sitting and for the questions that were asked. Both sentences describe one completed event, not a standing policy — so anyone preparing on the assumption of "90 seconds per question", or of a roomy schedule, should treat those as descriptions of the August paper rather than rules for the next one.

2. The date is open. The FAQ's answer to when the next test is:

"Information om när nästa provtillfälle är kommer att meddelas på uhr.se under hösten. När det finns ett nytt provtillfälle att anmäla sig till behöver du göra en ny anmälan."

Information about the next sitting will be announced on uhr.se during the autumn, and when there is a new sitting to register for, a new registration is required. So the autumn holds two separate announcements to watch on uhr.se: the results date, and the next test date.

3. The location is open. The August sitting was Stockholm-only, at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö. Asked which places the test is available in, UHR now says:

"Information om var nästa prov i samhällskunskap kommer kunna skrivas kommer."

Information about where the next civics test can be written is to come. The honest reading is narrow: the Stockholm-only statement has been withdrawn because it described a sitting that has happened, not because UHR has promised more cities. Nothing here says the next test will be held outside Stockholm — only that UHR has not yet said where.

4. Registration is closed, with no reopening date. From the About page:

"Anmälan till medborgarskapsprovet är stängd och det går inte att anmäla sig till provet. Information om när anmälan öppnar inför nästa provtillfälle kommer."

Registration is closed and it is not possible to register. Information about when registration opens ahead of the next sitting is to come. The test-day page has been emptied the same way: where it once published an 8:15 / 9:30 / 10:00 schedule, it now reads simply "Schema för nästa provtillfälle kommer." — the schedule for the next sitting is to come.

What has not changed

The rewrite cleared out the sitting-specific detail and left the structural rules standing. If you are likely to sit a future test, these are the parts you can still rely on.

Migrationsverket still controls who sits the test. Verbatim: "Det är Migrationsverket som avgör vem som får skriva provet. Du kan bara anmäla dig om du fått ett anvisningsbrev från Migrationsverket." Migrationsverket decides who may write the test, and you can only register if you have received an instruction letter (anvisningsbrev) from them. UHR cannot let you in without it, and questions about the letter go to Migrationsverket, not UHR.

The test is not the only route. UHR repeats the exemption pointedly: "Tänk på att du kan uppfylla kravet på grundläggande kunskaper om det svenska samhället på annat sätt och då behöver du inte anmäla dig till provet." You may be able to meet the civics-knowledge requirement another way, in which case you do not need to register at all. Whether your grades qualify is Migrationsverket's decision, not UHR's.

Swedish only. "Nej, medborgarskapsprovet kan bara göras på svenska."

The ID rules and test-day conduct rules are intact. The test-day page still requires valid Swedish identification showing your personnummer, still excludes a foreign passport and electronic ID, still permits only a pencil, an eraser and simple pharmacy earplugs at your seat, and still warns that leaving the hall mid-test risks forfeiting your result. We covered all of it in detail in our test-day rules piece, written before the August sitting; the rules quoted there still stand, though the schedule and venue in it applied to 15 August specifically.

The five official example questions are still published, unchanged, on both the About page and the FAQ — still the only officially published sample items, and still a fair guide to how questions are built.

Failing still routes through Migrationsverket. "Om du får ett underkänt resultat kan du få möjlighet att visa kunskaper på nytt. Kontakta Migrationsverket för att få information om vad som gäller för dig." If you receive a failing result you may get the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge again, and Migrationsverket is the authority on what applies in your case. The conditional is UHR's, and it is still not a guarantee.

UHR's warning about third-party practice tests stands. "Det kan finnas övningsprov på internet som andra personer eller företag har tagit fram. UHR vill vara tydliga med att vi inte står bakom dessa och att kvaliteten på dem inte är kontrollerad av oss eller någon annan myndighet." That applies to every third-party study resource, ours included. UHR's own utbildningsmaterial, last updated 12 August 2026, remains the authoritative preparation source.

The Swedish-language test: autumn 2027 at the earliest

UHR says only that a Swedish test comes "vid senare tillfälle". Migrationsverket is more specific, and this is the more useful statement for planning. From its requirements page for adults:

"Medborgarskapsprov i svenska kommer att erbjudas tidigast under hösten 2027."

A citizenship test in Swedish will be offered at the earliest during autumn 2027. Note tidigast — this is a floor, not a date. And critically, Migrationsverket names the bridge for the intervening year:

"Fram till dess kan personer som saknar godkända utbildningsmeriter visa sina språkkunskaper genom godkänt resultat på Tisus-testet. Under övergångsperioden kan även andra kunskapsprov som med hög grad av säkerhet visar kunskaper i svenska på funktionell nivå användas för att styrka språkkunskaperna, exempelvis Folkuniversitetets Swedex."

Until then, people who lack approved educational merits can show their language skills with a pass on the Tisus test. During the transition period, other knowledge tests that demonstrate functional Swedish with a high degree of certainty may also be used — Folkuniversitetet's Swedex is Migrationsverket's own example. Neither is administered by UHR; as UHR notes, Swedex belongs to Folkuniversitetet and Tisus to Stockholm University.

For applicants who need to prove Swedish before autumn 2027, that is the practical route, and it is available now rather than in a year. What UHR has not said

Three gaps are worth naming, because their absence is easy to mistake for information.

No participant figure. UHR has not published how many people registered for or sat the August test. No count appears on the About page, the test-day page, the FAQ, or UHR's press page. Any number circulating for the August sitting is not, at the time of writing, sourced to UHR.

No pass mark. UHR has not published the score needed for a godkänt result, nor whether the threshold was fixed in advance or will be set after the trial questions have been analysed. For a first live outing of a new question bank, the second is entirely normal — but it means nobody can currently calculate whether they passed.

No exact results date. October is a month, not a day, and UHR explicitly says the date is still to come.

What to do now

If you sat the August test: there is nothing to submit and nobody to chase. Your result appears in your registration account in October and travels to Migrationsverket by itself. Keep the account login working — it is where both the result and any future kallelse appear.

If you are waiting to be invited: the gate is Migrationsverket's anvisningsbrev, not UHR's registration page. Registration is closed to everyone right now, so a closed page is not a signal about your case. Watch uhr.se during the autumn for the next sitting, and expect to make a fresh registration when it opens.

If you may need to prove Swedish: the citizenship language test is autumn 2027 at the earliest, so Tisus — or, per Migrationsverket, a test such as Swedex — is the available route in the meantime. Confirm with Migrationsverket that your intended route satisfies your case before paying for a test.

If you might sit a future civics test: prepare from UHR's own utbildningsmaterial, and do not anchor on the August paper's length. Ninety minutes and sixty questions described one sitting; UHR has deliberately left both open for the next.
