# Sweden's New Citizenship Application Page Is Live — Five Facts You Can Read Today

Migrationsverket's adult-citizenship application page came back online after the maintenance window closed and now publishes the operational details under the new rules. The fee is**2 900 kr**. Income is **250 200 kr/year**. Language is **CEFR B1 and A2**. Processing time is **75 per cent within 56 months**. The civics test is **by invitation only**. Here is exactly what Migrationsverket says, in its own words, on the live page tonight.

## Why this matters now

From**6 June 2026**, Sweden's tightened citizenship framework took effect. Migrationsverket has now updated its live adult-citizenship application page to reflect the operational details of the new rules. Where the May press releases gave high-level descriptions, the live page now publishes the actual numbers and procedural details applicants will encounter when they file. We checked the live page tonight (7 June 2026) and quote it verbatim throughout this article. For the deadline-day context, see our [5 June e-service closure post](/en/blog/sweden-citizenship-e-service-closed-5-june-2026/). For the wider picture, see our [2026 changes overview](/en/blog/whats-new-2026/).

## 1. The application fee is now 2 900 kr

The single biggest operational change visible on the live page is the application fee. Migrationsverket's adult-citizenship page now states verbatim:

> *"Avgift: 2 900 kr"*

This is followed by a refund clause:

> *"Du får inte tillbaka avgiften om du får avslag på din ansökan."*

That is: "Fee: 2 900 kr. You do not get the fee back if your application is rejected."

### Who is exempt

Per Migrationsverket, two specific groups pay no fee:

- **Stateless persons who have received refugee status.**
- **Stateless refugees who have received travel documents from Migrationsverket.**

Anyone else applying as an adult pays the 2 900 kr fee. The fee is paid at submission. For a deeper breakdown of total cost of becoming a Swedish citizen, see our[fee and cost guide](/en/blog/test-fee-cost-2026/); we have updated it to reflect the new fee. If you are still in the process of preparing, the free [**Swedish Citizenship Test Prep**](https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6763254627?pt=127643585&ct=web-blog-fee-2900-en-body&mt=8) app has 180+ structured lessons aligned with UHR's *Sverige i fokus* material — useful while you wait for the civics-test invitation.

## 2. The income floor is 250 200 kr per year

The page states the income requirement (försörjningskrav) as three income base amounts (inkomstbasbelopp) per year. For 2026, the inkomstbasbelopp is**83 400 kr** per Pensionsmyndigheten's calculation under the government's decision, and three times that is exactly **250 200 kr**. On a monthly basis, that is about **20 850 kr before tax**.

The rule covers each of the three years before your application. There is also a cap on försörjningsstöd (income support) of six months total in that three-year window. For a detailed walkthrough of the income rule and its edge cases, see our[income requirement deep-dive](/en/blog/income-requirement-2026/).

## 3. The language requirement is CEFR B1 and A2

The live page now states the language requirement in CEFR levels (Gemensam europeisk referensram för språk, often abbreviated GERS in Swedish):

- **Läs- och hörförståelse: Nivå B1** — reading and listening at CEFR level B1.
- **Muntlig och skriftlig färdighet: Nivå A2** — speaking and writing at CEFR level A2.

In plain English: B1 means you can follow standard Swedish on everyday topics and form clear opinions on familiar matters. A2 means you can communicate in simple direct exchanges on familiar topics and routine matters. For the long-form explanation of what B1 and A2 mean in practice, see our[language test guide](/en/blog/language-test-2027/). The Swedish-language test itself is expected at the earliest from autumn 2027 (per Prop 2025/26:175).

## 4. 75% of cases are now decided within 56 months

The single most striking number on the page is the processing-time statement. Migrationsverket reports:

> *"75% av nyligen avgjorda ärenden ha avgjorts inom: 56 månader"*

That is:**75% of recently decided cases were decided within 56 months** — about **four years and eight months**. Read carefully:

- It is the **upper-quartile boundary** of recent decisions, not the average. Half of cases take less than the median; a quarter take longer than 56 months.
- It is a backward-looking statistic — what recently decided cases took. It is not a forecast of how long a new application will take starting today.
- It comes after Riksrevisionen's **RiR 2025:5** report (median queue time 290 days) and JO's decision **9043-2024** — both of which we summarised in our [watchdog rulings post](/en/blog/watchdog-rulings-migrationsverket-2026/).

For applicants this means: budget the new application as a long-term project rather than a six-month milestone. See also our[backlog explainer](/en/blog/citizenship-backlog-2026/) and [2025 statistics post](/en/blog/sweden-citizenship-2025-statistics/) (citizenships granted fell 41% year-on-year in 2025).

## 5. The civics test is by invitation only

Many readers ask how to register for the medborgarskapsprovet. Migrationsverket clarifies the process directly:

> *"När det finns möjlighet att göra medborgarskapsprov kommer Migrationsverket att skicka dig ett erbjudande om att göra provet om du inte uppfyller kunskapskraven på annat sätt."*

That is: when it becomes possible to take the citizenship test, Migrationsverket will send you an offer to take the test — if you do not already meet the knowledge requirements in another way.**You do not self-register with UHR.** The flow is:

1. Submit your citizenship application via Migrationsverket's e-tjänst (which is now back online).
2. If Migrationsverket determines the knowledge requirement applies to you and you have not satisfied it another way, the agency sends you an invitation.
3. You then register with UHR using that invitation.
4. You take the test on the scheduled date (the first pilot is on 15 August 2026).

This clarifies the relationship between Migrationsverket and UHR. Migrationsverket is the gatekeeper; UHR runs the test. For the registration mechanics, see our[UHR registration guide](/en/blog/medborgarskapsprovet-anmalan/).

## What hasn't changed

While the operational fee and language details are new on the live page, several core elements of the framework remain as previously communicated:

- **Eight-year residency** — the main rule for adults. See our [8-year rule deep-dive](/en/blog/8-year-residency-rule/).
- **No transitional rules** — applications decided on or after 6 June 2026 are assessed under the new framework. See [pending applications guide](/en/blog/pending-applications-2026/) and [6 June cutoff](/en/blog/june-6-deadline-old-rules/).
- **Skötsamt och hederligt levnadssätt** — the orderly-and-honest conduct requirement. See our [conduct requirement guide](/en/blog/hederligt-levnadssatt-2026/).
- **Personal appearance** — the in-person ID check remains standard. See [identity verification](/en/blog/identity-verification-citizenship/) and [in-person ID check guide](/en/blog/id-check-booking-locations-2026/).

## What this all means for you

If you are preparing to apply, the actionable summary is:

1. **Budget 2 900 kr for the application fee.** It is non-refundable.
2. **Verify your income for 2023, 2024 and 2025** against the 250 200 kr threshold. If a year is short, gather documentation of why (parental leave, sickness via Försäkringskassan, etc.).
3. **Audit your försörjningsstöd history**. The cap is six months total in the three-year window.
4. **Pin yourself to CEFR B1 reading/listening and A2 speaking/writing**. Most SFI-D graduates are around B1; many TISUS holders are above. See our [SFI D guide](/en/blog/sfi-course-d-citizenship/) and [TISUS guide](/en/blog/tisus-citizenship-sweden-2026/).
5. **Begin preparing for the civics test now**, even before the Migrationsverket invitation arrives. The official UHR material is *Sverige i fokus*. The [**Swedish Citizenship Test Prep**](https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id6763254627?pt=127643585&ct=web-blog-fee-2900-en-action&mt=8) app has structured lessons mapped directly to the source material — free to install.
6. **Watch for the Migrationsverket invitation** if you applied before or after 6 June. The invitation route is the only way into the test.
7. **Expect a multi-year timeline**. Plan around the 56-month figure rather than the legacy 290-day median from Riksrevisionen 2025:5.

## Caveats

- This article quotes the live [Migrationsverket adult-citizenship application page](https://www.migrationsverket.se/du-vill-ansoka/svenskt-medborgarskap/medborgarskap-for-vuxna/medborgarskap-for-vuxna.html) as of 7 June 2026. The page may be updated as the agency refines the operational rollout — always confirm the current text on migrationsverket.se before relying on a number.
- The 56-month figure is a backward-looking statistic on recently decided cases. It is not a forecast for applications filed today.
- This is general information, not legal advice. For your specific situation, contact Migrationsverket or a qualified immigration advisor (a *migrationsrättsligt ombud* or *advokat* specialising in migrationsrätt).

## Frequently asked questions
