# Four Days to Sweden's First Citizenship Test: The Test-Day Rules, and the ID Rule That Stops People at the Door

Sweden's first*medborgarskapsprov* is on **Saturday 15 August 2026** at Stockholmsmässan in Älvsjö. Registration closed months ago, the test is full, and the summonses — *kallelser* — are now in test-takers' accounts. UHR's test-day page, last updated 17 July 2026, sets out the practical rules, and one of them will turn people away at the entrance: **a foreign passport is not accepted as identification**, and neither is BankID or any other electronic ID. Only three Swedish documents work. This article sets out the whole test-day framework — the ID rule, the clock, the venue, what you may carry to your seat, the test's structure, UHR's own five example questions, and what happens after — quoting UHR verbatim throughout. This is general information about Swedish public administration, not legal advice.

**Update, 19 August 2026:** the test described below has now been held. UHR has since rewritten its pages — the results are due in October, and the date, location, test time and question count for the next sitting are all unannounced. The identification, permitted-items and conduct rules quoted here still stand, but the schedule and venue applied to 15 August 2026 specifically. ## The ID rule: a foreign passport will not get you in

This is the sentence to read twice. From UHR's[Provdagen](https://www.uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/provdagen/) page:

> *"För att få skriva provet måste du alltid kunna visa giltig svensk legitimation. Din legitimation kontrolleras flera gånger under provdagen."*

In English: to be allowed to sit the test you must always be able to show**valid Swedish identification**. Your ID is checked several times during the test day. UHR then closes the two doors that many test-takers would reasonably have assumed were open:

> *"Ditt svenska personnummer måste framgå och du kan därför inte legitimera dig med ett utländskt pass på provdagen. Det är inte möjligt att legitimera sig med elektronisk legitimation."*

Your Swedish*personnummer* must be shown on the document, and you therefore **cannot** identify yourself with a foreign passport on test day. Nor is electronic identification — BankID and equivalents — possible.

The structural logic is that the document must carry the personnummer, which a foreign passport by definition does not. But the practical effect deserves stating plainly: a substantial share of the people sitting a citizenship test are, almost by definition, people whose main identity document is a passport from another country. For anyone in that position who has not yet obtained a Swedish ID document, the passport in the drawer is not a fallback.

UHR names exactly three accepted documents:

1. ***"Identitetskort för folkbokförda i Sverige (Skatteverket)"*** — the identity card for people registered in Sweden, issued by the Swedish Tax Agency.
2. ***"Svenskt körkort"*** — a Swedish driving licence.
3. ***"Svenskt SIS-märkt id-kort"*** — a Swedish SIS-marked ID card.

And one more trap, in UHR's words:

> *"Om giltighetstiden har gått ut är din id-handling inte giltig. Tänk på att kontrollera din id-handlings giltighetstid då det ibland kan ta lång tid att beställa en ny."*

If the validity period has expired, your ID document is not valid. UHR explicitly warns that ordering a new one can take a long time — advice that, four days out, has largely run out of runway. Anyone holding an ID that expires on or before 15 August should treat this as the single most urgent item on their list.

One narrow related case UHR addresses in its[FAQ](https://www.uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/fragor-och-svar/): if you changed your name close to the test date, the old name may still be used at the test occasion. In that case, verbatim: *"Du behöver då ta med dig legitimation med rätt personnummer och ett personbevis som bekräftar namnbytet"* — bring ID with the correct personnummer plus a *personbevis* confirming the name change.

## Your kallelse: it is in your account, and you must print it

UHR does not post the summons. It appears in the registration account you created when you signed up:

> *"Någon vecka innan provdagen kommer du få en kallelse i ditt anmälningskonto. Du behöver logga in på ditt konto för att kunna se din kallelse."*

About a week before test day the kallelse arrives in your registration account, and you need to log in to see it. That week-before window means the kallelse should be there now. UHR's instruction on what to do with it is unambiguous:

> *"Skriv ut och ta med din kallelse på provdagen. Den behövs för att du ska kunna komma in i provlokalen."*

Print your kallelse and bring it on test day — it is needed for you to get into the test venue. Read together with the ban on mobile phones at the seat, the print instruction is not a formality: a kallelse that exists only on a phone screen is a kallelse you may not be able to produce where it counts.

The kallelse also carries information that is not published anywhere else. UHR states:*"Den innehåller information om var du ska skriva provet samt vilka tider och regler som gäller"* — it contains information about where you will sit the test and which times and rules apply. Specifically, your exact hall inside Stockholmsmässan is only in the kallelse: *"Din exakta lokal inom Stockholmsmässan kommer att stå i din kallelse. Du måste sitta vid din tilldelade plats."* You must sit at your assigned seat.

If it has not arrived, UHR gives a clear escalation path:*"Om du är anmäld och inte ser någon kallelse på ditt konto en vecka före provet ska du kontakta UHR genom vårt kontaktformulär."* If you are registered and see no kallelse in your account a week before the test, contact UHR through the contact form. With four days left, that is a same-day task, not a next-week task.

## The clock: three fixed times, and one of them is a hard cutoff

UHR publishes the day's schedule as three fixed points:

- **8:15** — *"Provlokalen öppnar"*. The test venue opens.
- **9:30** — *"Lokalen stänger för fler inpasserande"*. The venue closes to further entrants.
- **10:00** — *"Provet inleds med instruktioner. Du måste vara på din plats senast då för att kunna skriva provet."* The test begins with instructions. You must be in your seat by then to be able to sit the test.

The 9:30 line is the one that matters most, and it is easy to misread. The test starts at 10:00, but the doors stop admitting people at**9:30** — a full half hour earlier. Arriving at 9:45 for a 10:00 start is, on UHR's own schedule, arriving late.

UHR reinforces the point with a queue warning:*"Du kommer behöva visa upp giltig legitimation när du kommer till provlokalen. Tänk på att det kan bli köer vid id-kontrollerna så kom i god tid. Det finns risk att du inte blir insläppt i lokalen efter det att provet har startat."* You will need to show valid ID on arrival, there may be queues at the ID checks, so come in good time — and there is a risk you will not be let in after the test has started. With a full venue and every attendee funnelling through an individual ID check, the practical arrival time is closer to 8:15 than to 9:30.

At the other end of the day, UHR sets expectations for departure:*"De flesta skrivande kommer att vara klara med själva provet cirka kl. 12:00. Därefter behöver UHR samla in proven innan du som provskrivare kan börja lämna lokalen."* Most test-takers will be finished with the test itself around 12:00, after which UHR needs to collect the papers before anyone can start leaving. UHR also notes that the end of the day can vary for those with an adapted test situation. Anyone planning childcare, a shift, or a return journey should budget past 12:00, not to it.

## Getting to Stockholmsmässan

The August 2026 test is held in one city only. UHR's FAQ is explicit:*"I augusti 2026 kan medborgarskapsprovet bara skrivas i Stockholm. Provet kommer att genomföras på Stockholmsmässan."* In August 2026 the citizenship test can only be sat in Stockholm, at Stockholmsmässan.

UHR's travel guidance, verbatim:*"Stockholmsmässan ligger strax söder om Stockholm, i Älvsjö. Resan tar cirka 10 minuter med kollektivtrafik från Stockholms centralstation med pendeltåg. Från pendeltågsstationen i Älvsjö är det sedan en kort promenad till Stockholmsmässan."* Stockholmsmässan is just south of Stockholm, in Älvsjö; the journey takes about 10 minutes by commuter train (*pendeltåg*) from Stockholm Central, followed by a short walk from Älvsjö station.

On driving, UHR is discouraging:*"Det är begränsat med parkering under provdagen och vi rekommenderar i första hand att nyttja kollektivtrafik för att ta sig till provlokalen."* Parking is limited on test day and public transport is the primary recommendation.

One further logistical note that matters for anyone travelling from outside Stockholm: 15 August 2026 is a Saturday, and weekend engineering works on the Stockholm commuter rail network are common. UHR does not address this, and this article is not in a position to predict it — but the cost of a replacement-bus detour on a day with a 9:30 door closure is asymmetric enough to justify checking the journey the evening before and leaving a wide margin.

## What you may carry to your seat — and what you may not

UHR draws a sharp line between the venue and the seat. There is a cloakroom for everything that does not cross it:

> *"Det finns en garderob där du kan hänga av dig ytterkläder och lämna väskor. Det finns ingen möjlighet att ta med större värdesaker, till exempel en dator, in i provlokalen. Vi rekommenderar att du lämnar sådana saker hemma. Varken UHR eller Stockholmsmässan kan ta ansvar för värdesaker som lämnas in i garderoben."*

There is a cloakroom for outerwear and bags. Larger valuables — a laptop is UHR's own example — cannot be brought into the test hall, UHR recommends leaving such items at home, and neither UHR nor Stockholmsmässan takes responsibility for valuables left in the cloakroom. That last clause is the operative one: the cloakroom is available, but it is not insured storage.

**Permitted at the seat**, in UHR's list:

- *"blyertspenna eller stift"* — a pencil or mechanical pencil. UHR adds that you should preferably bring your own, but that pens will be available if you do not: *"Du ska helst ha med dig en egen blyertspenna, men det kommer även att finnas pennor tillgängliga ifall du inte har med dig en."*
- *"suddgummi"* — an eraser.
- *"enkla öronproppar från apotek"* — simple earplugs from a pharmacy, with the caveat *"(du kan behöva visa dem för provledaren)"*: you may need to show them to the test leader. The word *enkla* is doing work here — these are basic foam earplugs, not noise-cancelling devices, which fall under the electronics ban below.

**Not permitted at the seat**, verbatim:

- *"mobiltelefon, smarta klockor, digitala klockor och annan elektronisk utrustning"* — mobile phone, smartwatches, digital watches, and other electronic equipment. Note that ordinary digital watches are banned, not only smartwatches. An analogue watch is the safe choice if you want to track time.
- *"hörlurar, airpods eller liknande"* — headphones, AirPods, or similar.
- *"andra hjälpmedel som kan lagra, innehålla, sända eller ta emot information, till exempel smarta glasögon och elektronisk penna"* — other aids that can store, contain, send, or receive information, for example smart glasses and electronic pens.
- *"mat och dryck (kan beviljas som anpassning för dig med diabetes)"* — food and drink, which may be granted as an adaptation for people with diabetes.

On food, UHR resolves the obvious question: there is a point in the day where eating is possible, and it is before the seat.*"Efter identitetskontrollen kommer det att finnas möjlighet att köpa enklare saker att äta och dricka. Kom dock ihåg att du inte får ha med dig mat eller dryck till din provplats."* After the ID check there will be an opportunity to buy simple food and drink — but you may not bring food or drink to your test seat.

## Inside the hall: follow the test leader, and do not leave

UHR's conduct rule carries a stated consequence, which makes it worth quoting in full:

> *"I början av provdagen informerar provledaren om hur provet går till och vilka regler som gäller. Det är viktigt att du följer provledarens instruktioner under hela provdagen. Du får till exempel inte lämna provlokalen när provet pågår. Om du lämnar lokalen i alla fall riskerar du att inte få ett resultat på provet."*

At the start of the day the test leader explains how the test works and which rules apply; it is important to follow those instructions throughout. You may not, for example, leave the test hall while the test is in progress — and if you leave anyway,**you risk not receiving a result**. That is the sanction stated on the page: not a warning, but the loss of the result you travelled for.

## The test itself: 90 minutes, 60 questions, paper, Swedish

UHR's specification of the test is short and consistent across its pages:

> *"Den faktiska provtiden är 90 minuter."*

The actual test time is 90 minutes. The test, verbatim from the Provdagen page:

- *"innehåller 60 frågor av flervalstyp, där ett svar är rätt"* — contains 60 multiple-choice questions, where one answer is correct. UHR's About page phrases this as *"cirka 60 frågor"* (approximately 60), with four options per question: *"flervalsfrågor med fyra svarsalternativ, där ett svar är rätt"*.
- *"är på svenska"* — is in Swedish. UHR's FAQ closes the door on alternatives: *"Kan jag göra provet på mitt modersmål? Nej, medborgarskapsprovet kan bara göras på svenska."* No, the citizenship test can only be taken in Swedish.
- *"skrivs på papper"* — is written on paper.
- *"innehåller en kort provenkät för att förbättra och utvärdera provet. Denna enkät ska fyllas i under provtiden. Om du inte hinner svara på enkäten påverkar det inte ditt resultat."* — contains a short questionnaire to improve and evaluate the test, to be filled in during the test time. If you do not have time to answer it, that does not affect your result.

That last point is a small but real time-management fact: the survey sits inside the 90 minutes, and it is explicitly optional as far as your score is concerned. Answer the 60 questions first.

On the answer sheet, UHR adds a warning it evidently expects to matter:*"Svaren måste markeras i provhäftet. Kontrollera att du markerat rätt i svarshäftet."* Answers must be marked in the test booklet — check that you have marked correctly in the answer booklet.

Note that the 90 minutes covers 60 questions, which is 90 seconds per question with nothing left over for the survey or for checking. UHR's own advice, below, is built around that arithmetic.

## UHR's five official example questions

UHR publishes five sample questions showing how the test's items are constructed. These are the only officially published examples, and they are reproduced here verbatim in Swedish — the language the test is in — with the four options as UHR lists them.

1.

***"Vad är den offentliga sektorns främsta uppgift?"***
*Att driva företag med vinst* · *Att ordna välfärdstjänster som vård och utbildning* · *Att formulera och stifta nya lagar* · *Att representera Sverige internationellt*

2.

***"Vilken titel har Sveriges statschef?"***
*Talman* · *Kung* · *Landshövding* · *Statsminister*

3.

***"Vilken svensk naturresurs har under lång tid haft stor betydelse för Sveriges ekonomi?"***
*Naturgas* · *Olja* · *Skog* · *Uran*

4.

***"Vilket land var under nästan 700 år, fram till år 1809, en del av Sverige?"***
*Norge* · *Finland* · *Danmark* · *Estland*

5.

***"En person skriver ett inlägg på sociala medier där hen kritiserar ett politiskt förslag. Vilket alternativ beskriver bäst hur yttrandefriheten fungerar?"***
*Personen får bara uttrycka positiva åsikter om politiska förslag* · *Personen får uttrycka sin åsikt så länge det skrivna inte bryter mot lagen* · *Personen måste först be om tillstånd att skriva inlägget* · *Personen får inte namnge politikerna som lagt förslaget*

Read as a set, these five say something about the test's design that no summary of the syllabus does. Four of them are single-fact recall — the role of the public sector, the head of state's title, a historically significant natural resource, the country that was part of Sweden until 1809. The fifth is different: it presents a scenario and asks which option best describes how a constitutional principle works in practice. That is an applied-reasoning item, and it signals that memorising a list of facts about Sweden is necessary but may not be sufficient.

UHR also publishes its own advice for the test, which is worth taking at face value:

> *"Läs noga igenom instruktionerna. Läs varje uppgift och svarsalternativ noggrant. Kontrollera att du markerat rätt svar i svarshäftet. Fastna inte – hoppa över svåra frågor och gå tillbaka senare. Våga gissa! Det finns inga minuspoäng."*

Read the instructions carefully. Read each task and answer option carefully. Check that you have marked the right answer in the answer booklet. Do not get stuck — skip hard questions and come back later. And, in UHR's own exclamation: dare to guess, because**there are no negative points**. That last item is the highest-value sentence on the page for anyone running short of time. With four options and no penalty for a wrong answer, a blank is strictly worse than a guess. No question should be left unmarked at 90 minutes.

## What "utprövningsprov" means — and what it does not

UHR describes the August sitting with a term that has caused some confusion. From the[About](https://www.uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/om-medborgarskapsprovet/) page:

> *"Att det är ett utprövningsprov betyder att det är första gången provfrågorna används i en verklig provsituation."*

Being an*utprövningsprov* means it is the first time the test questions are used in a real test situation. UHR explains the wider process verbatim: *"Arbete med utprövning är en nödvändig och etablerad del i utvecklingen av ett nytt, storskaligt prov som detta. Det sker i flera steg med så kallade miniutprövningar för att säkerställa kvalitet och rättssäkerhet för en tillförlitlig bedömning."* Trial work is a necessary and established part of developing a new large-scale test, done in several steps with so-called mini-trials to ensure quality and legal certainty for a reliable assessment. The questions have been tested in various ways before, but August is the first time at scale with the test's actual target group.

What it does**not** mean is that the sitting is a rehearsal without consequence. The result is published, and UHR states it is reported automatically to Migrationsverket for the continued processing of the citizenship application. It counts.

UHR does flag one concrete effect on the day:*"Att det är ett utprövningsprov innebär också att det kommer att ges generöst med tid vid provtillfället för alla och för de frågor som ställs."* Being a trial test also means generous time will be given to everyone at the test occasion and for the questions asked. Read against the stated 90-minute test time, the fair reading is that the day around the test is padded rather than that the 90 minutes is elastic — which is another reason not to plan a tight departure.

A related caution from UHR about preparation materials, worth repeating because it bears on what people study from:*"Det kan finnas övningsprov på internet som andra personer eller företag har tagit fram. UHR vill vara tydliga med att vi inte står bakom dessa och att kvaliteten på dem inte är kontrollerad av oss eller någon annan myndighet."* There may be practice tests online produced by other people or companies; UHR states clearly that it does not stand behind them and that their quality is not checked by UHR or any other authority. That disclaimer applies to every third-party study resource — including ours. UHR's own [utbildningsmaterial](https://www.uhr.se/medborgarskapsprovet/utbildningsmaterial/) is the authoritative source.

## After the test: results in the autumn

There is no result on the day, and no date yet. UHR's FAQ states verbatim:

> *"När det finns ett resultat från medborgarskapsprovet kommer du att kunna se det på ditt konto. Resultatet rapporteras automatiskt till Migrationsverket för deras fortsatta handläggning av din ansökan om medborgarskap."*

When there is a result, you will be able to see it in your account, and the result is reported automatically to Migrationsverket for their continued processing of your citizenship application. On timing:

> *"Resultatet publiceras under hösten. Mer information om vilket datum resultatet publiceras kommer."*

The result is published during the autumn, and more information about which date is to come. The automatic reporting is the practically important half: no test-taker needs to forward anything to Migrationsverket themselves.

On a failing result, UHR points to Migrationsverket rather than answering directly:*"Om du får ett underkänt resultat kan du få möjlighet att visa kunskaper på nytt. Kontakta Migrationsverket för att få information om vad som gäller för dig."* If you receive a failing result you may get the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge again, and you should contact Migrationsverket for information on what applies in your case. The conditional phrasing — *kan du få möjlighet*, you *may* get the opportunity — is UHR's, and it is not a guarantee.

On the next sitting:*"Information om när nästa provtillfälle är kommer att meddelas på uhr.se under hösten. När det finns ett nytt provtillfälle att anmäla sig till behöver du göra en ny anmälan."* Information about the next test occasion will be announced on uhr.se during the autumn, and a new registration will be required. So the autumn brings two announcements to watch on uhr.se: the results date, and the next test date.

Worth restating for readers who are not sitting on 15 August: the test is one route to the knowledge requirement, not the only one. UHR's FAQ notes that*"du kan uppfylla kravet på grundläggande kunskaper om det svenska samhället på annat sätt och då behöver du inte anmäla dig till provet"* — you can meet the requirement of basic knowledge about Swedish society in another way, in which case you do not need to register for the test. Whether your grades qualify is Migrationsverket's decision, not UHR's. The Swedish-language component is still to come: *"Prov i svenska införs vid senare tillfälle."*

## The four-day checklist

Distilled from UHR's pages, in rough order of how badly each one can go wrong:

**1. Check your ID today.** Is it one of the three accepted Swedish documents, and is it still valid on 15 August? A foreign passport and BankID are both explicitly excluded. This is the only item on this list that cannot be fixed on the morning.

**2. Log in and find your kallelse.** It should be in your registration account now. If it is not there, contact UHR through the contact form today — UHR's own threshold for escalating was one week before the test.

**3. Print the kallelse.** On paper. You need it to enter, and your phone will not be at your seat.

**4. Read the kallelse for your exact hall.** Stockholmsmässan is large and your specific room and assigned seat are only stated there.

**5. Plan to arrive well before 9:30.** The doors close to entrants half an hour before the 10:00 start, ID checks will queue, and the venue is a 10-minute commuter train from Stockholm Central plus a walk. Public transport over driving.

**6. Pack a pencil, an eraser, and nothing electronic.** Leave the laptop at home, put the phone and any digital watch in the cloakroom, and remember food and drink stop at the seat.

**7. Clear the afternoon.** Most people finish the test around 12:00, and papers are collected before anyone leaves.

**8. On the day, answer every question.** No negative marking. A guess beats a blank, every time.
